On 25 June 1975 President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed proclaimed an Emergency citing 'internal disturbance', days after a court set aside Indira Gandhi's 1971 election. Civil liberties were curtailed, the press censored and opponents jailed under MISA. Sikkim became the 22nd state; Aryabhata reached orbit.
