India · 1857The Revolt of 1857: from Meerut to Delhi, the great rebellion against Company rule

A sepoy mutiny over greased Enfield cartridges erupted at Meerut on 10 May 1857 and reached Delhi, where rebels accepted Bahadur Shah Zafar as their symbolic leader. The revolt spread across the Gangetic plain and central India before British forces retook Delhi in September. India's first universities were established at Calcutta, Bombay and Madras.
