Kerala's higher education authorities and the universities concerned should set down a plain neutrality norm for Vice-Chancellors and statutory heads: engage every intellectual tradition, headline none; accept invitations to lectures and debates across the spectrum, but withhold the institutional weight of the office from any single ideological organisation's set-piece. Put the norm in writing, publish it, and apply it evenly to right, left and centre alike. A university's autonomy is secured not by boycotts or outrage but by a visible, even-handed distance from every camp. The test is simple: the youngest student on campus should never doubt that the chair above her belongs to her as fully as to anyone.
