A concrete path is available. The Union government should press, through bilateral channels including with the United States, for a transparent, time-bound inquiry into the reported deaths. It should use the G7 platform and the concurrence of the President of the United Arab Emirates to build a practical coalition for free navigation and safer passage through the Strait of Hormuz. And at home it should build a standing protocol — insurance, evacuation, repatriation and a single point of accountability — for the Indian seafarers who keep global commerce moving. Friendship abroad is ultimately proved at home, in the demonstrated safety of the ordinary citizen. That is the work now.
