The caution is equally important. Armed forces are professional institutions whose first test is readiness, cohesion and command integrity, not cultural display. The revised manual sets detailed standards on tattoos, body piercings, hairstyles, cosmetics and moustaches, with moustaches capped at 12 centimetres. Such specificity is defensible in a force built on uniformity, but only if applied without arbitrariness, and without loading hidden social assumptions onto women or personnel across regions and communities. Discipline must remain military discipline, not moral policing in uniform. Symbolism that sharpens professionalism strengthens the force; symbolism that becomes performance distracts it. The line between the two is drawn in implementation, not in the pamphlet's preface.

Cloth, though, is the easier half of the task. The dependence that actually costs a country is not a pouch belt but reliance on external platforms, software and supply chains. The same evidence makes the point. The Indo-French partnership has been reported in terms of 114 Rafale jets, Rafale source code and 12 new deals ranging from artificial intelligence to semiconductors; Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has also been reported to have studied in France and the United States. None of this warrants embarrassment — cooperation is sensible statecraft. But it marks honestly where sovereignty is still contested: in how much control a country has over the platforms it flies, maintains and upgrades. That is decolonisation with teeth, and it outweighs the retirement of a word.

An army is decolonised not only when its dress code reflects national values, but when its capabilities, maintenance systems and supply chains reduce dependence in practice. Confidence in dress must be earned again in capability.

The cost of new dress should be transparent, and must not crowd out operational needs. A year from the June 30 transition the test is plain: more capability made and maintained in India, not merely more cloth cut at home.
