Patents matter too — Jio Platforms' leap into WIPO's top 20 signals a firm climbing the value chain from importing technology to owning it. Duty concessions under free-trade pacts can open foreign markets to furniture exporters and promote capacity expansion and new investments in India. Building hatcheries, urea plants and an economic region is the unglamorous work of a productive economy. Much of this is the right ambition, honestly pursued.

A plant inaugurated is an input, not a result. The test of the ethanol order is not the headline percentage but the verified change in crude imports. The test of the urea plants is delivered tonnes and steadier farm input costs. The test of the patents is whether innovation translates into deeper domestic capability. Measured this way, the project is promising and unfinished — too consequential to be left to the language of the press release.

Self-reliance built on disclosed trade-offs, measured targets and honest audits earns its authority; built on announcements alone, it risks draining scarce water while the oil tankers keep arriving.
