But an army is tested by capability, not couture. The same revised rules that drop the pouch belt also cap moustaches at 12 centimetres and set standards for tattoos, body piercings, hairstyles and cosmetics for male and female personnel — appearance, not readiness. The counterargument deserves its due: discipline is built of small habits, and bearing is one of them. Yet the danger is to let the visible stand in for the invisible — equipment, training, technology and the everyday welfare of the soldier who holds the line. There is a second caution. 'National ethos' is a fine phrase until it is pulled towards a partisan one; the Army's non-partisan character is among its most precious equipment, and no pamphlet should be allowed to fray it.

That is the difference between a customer and a power. It is fitting that the incoming chief has studied not only in India but also in France and the United States; modern soldiering is increasingly interoperable and technological. An Armoured Corps officer assumes command at a time when mechanised warfare is being reshaped by software-led systems. The coat is now Indian; the harder question is whether the capability inside it will be Indian too.

So the verdict is a welcome with a condition. Retire the colonial coat — that instinct is sound. But measure the reform by what it does for capability, not wardrobe. Extend indigenisation from cloth to the assembly line: a defence-industrial base that builds, sustains and, where possible, owns the critical systems the soldier carries. Protect the apolitical uniform as fiercely as any border. Let the handover on June 30 mark the only national ethos worth the name — a soldier fully equipped, a republic that never sends him to war ill-prepared, and a chain of command answerable to the Constitution alone. Respect the soldier; question the war; and never confuse the tunic for the strength beneath it.
