And the same state that wins headlines abroad owes its own firms stronger commercial capacity — when Tata Consultancy Services loses a 168-million-dollar trade-secrets appeal before the US Supreme Court, over software originally licensed by CSC to Transamerica, the lesson is that stature must be matched by legal and commercial muscle.

Equip Indian firms abroad with stronger legal and commercial support, so that a company like Tata Consultancy Services does not stand alone in consequential disputes. Honours will keep arriving; let the republic learn to measure them by the wage they raise at home, not the applause they earn abroad.
