The push for faster movement on the India-EU free trade agreement is sound, yet openness must be matched by support for the workers and small firms who will face sharper competition. Diplomacy that bypasses these guardrails buys prestige at the cost of capability.

Nuclear and defence cooperation should be shaped to build Indian supply chains and intellectual property, not import dependence. The Economic Security Dialogue and Innovation Roadmap 2030 must be tied to measurable skilling and jobs. And because strong states make a strong centre, the states competing for this investment deserve a seat at the table, since plants rise in districts, not communiqués. Diplomacy abroad earns its keep only when it is felt on an Indian workbench.
