Markets, meanwhile, rose on hopes of a West Asia ceasefire and softer oil: investor wealth increased by ₹18 lakh crore across two sessions, and foreign portfolio investors turned net buyers for the first time in eleven sessions. The market's cheer, too, rests on fragile ground — hopes of a West Asia ceasefire and softer oil, not a settled domestic transformation. The test of respect is the symmetry of the deal, not the warmth of the toast.

Diplomacy of this ambition must be judged by one unglamorous question: does it shift the rules in India's favour, or merely rearrange the seating at the summit table?

Second, tie every comprehensive partnership to a measurable return — verified gains under the labour-mobility MoU, practical cooperation under the defence letter of intent, and stronger mechanisms to protect Indian workers and mariners abroad. Third, convert the rhetoric of global-body reform into a standing coalition of under-represented economies, with annual milestones rather than communiqués. Honours will keep arriving; let the government bank outcomes instead. A diplomacy measured by what reaches ordinary citizens is the only diplomacy a self-respecting republic should celebrate.
