By that standard the test of Evian is not the honour conferred or the warmth of a long-delayed meeting, but whether the Union government can secure a transparent accounting for three citizens killed after foreign fire, and whether goodwill converts into protection for the Indians whose work carries them into dangerous waters and distant economies. A power genuinely courted can afford to ask hard questions of those who court it; a power merely flattered cannot. India should insist on being the former, and judge the week by that demand rather than by its photographs.

Second, hold the Canada timeline to its word, speeding up trade deal negotiations this year so partnership shows up in tangible economic gains rather than communiqués. Third, build standing protections for Indian seafarers and workers in regions exposed to conflict and disruption, so the next emergency meets a state already organised to defend its own. Honour is pleasant, and recognition is welcome; but for the family of a dead sailor, only an accounting and a safer sea will do.
