A state cannot celebrate the labour, mobility and presence of its citizens across India and beyond without taking seriously the reciprocal duty of protection. Growth without the guarantee of life is a poorer achievement than its headline numbers suggest.

The diaspora death tests consular follow-through once the cameras leave. Each tragedy may be private; the aggregate is a public responsibility.

At home, authorities must ensure timely police inquiry, accessible distress support, and fair investigation in crimes against women. Intimate-partner violence must be approached as a safety system to be built, not a private misfortune. A nation that wishes to be counted among the great should begin by ensuring its humblest citizen can live, work and travel with greater security. That floor, once laid, carries everything above it.
