The strongest case for the change is that it is legitimate. The Army describes the new code as a deliberate move away from residual colonial-era symbols and terms, while maintaining service traditions and professional standards. An independent republic is entitled to dress its soldiers in an idiom its own citizens recognise. Decolonising a symbol is not automatically vanity, for symbols shape institutional self-image and public meaning. On this count the institution deserves a fair hearing, not reflexive scorn.

An army's worth is counted in readiness, equipment, logistics, coordination across the services, and the welfare of the soldier on the line — none of which a jacket alters. There is a risk that indigenising the cut of a uniform substitutes for the harder, slower indigenisation of what fills it. A second risk lies in the micro-rules. A manual that caps moustache length and catalogues piercings can blur the line between discipline and trivia if enforced without proportion.

Weigh the two and the honest verdict is neither applause nor alarm. Renaming customs costs little and is defensible on its own terms. Yet the evidence before us speaks of cloth and codes, not capability — and a leader must judge what is shown, not what is wished. The manual standardises rules for women and men in uniform; that is welcome if it is applied with clarity and fairness. The measure of 'national ethos' is not only whether the jacket is Indian in style, but whether institutional reform reaches the soldier's equipment, conditions and preparedness. Pride must be disciplined by purpose.

As the uniform changes, command changes hands by the book: the Defence Ministry has announced that the serving Vice Chief will assume office as Chief of the Army Staff on June 30, upon the incumbent's retirement. An orderly military succession is itself an institutional asset. Reports that the incoming chief has studied both in India and abroad need not contradict indigenisation. An army open to professional learning while rooted in its own soil is precisely what indigenisation, rightly understood, should mean.

The way forward is to let the symbol lead to substance, not stand in for it. Pair every indigenisation chapter in a dress manual with a clear measure of the indigenisation that matters: the soldier's kit, equipment and supply chains, and a dated plan to strengthen them. Implement the code through clear written instructions, with proportionate exemptions on medical or operational grounds and feedback from serving personnel across arms. Let institutional oversight keep its gaze on preparedness, not pageantry. Decolonise the cloth, by all means; then do the harder work the cloth should stand for.
